So begins my review of Umineko (This includes both the questions arc and Chiru, the answers arc). THERE ARE SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!!!!!! Same person who wrote Higurashi, this one I can recommend the manga, VN, or anime!.A mystery unparallel to all other mysteries – For all you mystery fans out there, just try to solve Umineko.Amazing characters – The character depth is insane.

Also, do yourself a favor and get the PS3 patch which adds voices and better art. DO NOT WATCH THE ANIME. I recommend reading the VN for the best experience, but the manga does work, although you lose some of the amazingness of the experience. Don’t look up spoilers at all. For the best experience, I would find a friend or two to read this with you blind. There will be spoilers in my review, but if you want a verdict, I must recommend you go put this on your reading list. After the eleven family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered. Also on the island are five of Kinzō’s servants, and his personal physician. The head of a wealthy family named Kinzō Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eleven of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzō’s assets will be divided once he is dead. Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986 during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島). The premise of the story is a mystery, but the mystery is beyond any mystery I’ve read before. Each contain 4 arcs, and together the 8 arcs present a brilliant story that rivals any great story. Umineko is made up of two different visual novels, umineko and umineko chiru. And Umineko ranks incredibly high on the list of current visual novels. Some visual novels incorporate choose your own adventure, but Umineko is a linear story. Visual novels are a part of the anime/Japanese visual culture, basically you can think of them as novels but with animations/art/voices/music.

Today I am going to be reviewing a visual novel, one of the greatest of all time, and can be definitely be called a masterpiece. I definitely recommend starting from the beginning of the visual novel though because I remember trying to jump into Episode 5 of the visual novel and being so confused what was happening as it’s better explained in the VN than the anime.Welcome to Rokkenjima. As others have said, the visual novel has a lot more story content that was missed out of the anime and basically a second half that carries on from where the anime finishes. I also watched the anime before reading the visual novel and had the same reaction as you. TL DR - The visual novel has more content, a second half to the story and is a fantastic story. dense, and the anime had to either breeze through, or otherwise skip, many details that all work together to make a pretty intricate narrative weave, and that many readers would consider an essential part of it's enjoyment.Īny material is going to be streamlined a bit in the adaptation process, but, like, the first story arc is roughly 8 hours (about 480 minutes) of reading, crammed into 5, 22-minute episodes (110) minutes on it's own it's serviceable enough, but it leaves A LOT on the cutting room floor, that kinda feels bad if you know what it is.īesides, if you enjoyed the anime, you will almost certainly just enjoy reading the VN, even moreso, so. Having the other half of the story definitely clarifies many things that occur in the first half, obviously. it really is not a great adaptation, and only even reaches the halfway point of the story, like everyone is basically saying.
